The Dinagat Islands sit just off the northeastern coast of Mindanao, often called the “Mystical Province” for their blend of natural beauty and spiritual heritage. Though they only became a separate province in 2006, their character has long been shaped by the sea, limestone cliffs, and the people who call the islands home.
San Jose, the provincial capital, serves as the hub for travel and daily life, but the true charm of Dinagat lies beyond the town, scattered across quiet beaches, blue lagoons, and forested ridges.
History here is layered. For many years, Dinagat was part of Surigao del Norte, its economy rooted in fishing and small-scale mining. In recent decades, tourism has begun to take hold, with visitors drawn to its secluded coves and untouched landscapes.
The presence of the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA) has also left its mark, from the Islander’s Castle that overlooks San Jose to the PBMA Shrine that draws both followers and the curious.
Life in Dinagat remains simple, and that is part of its appeal. Locals, known as Dinagatnons, are warm and welcoming, often doubling as boatmen, guides, or hosts in family-run homestays. Fishing traditions still thrive, while festivals and folk practices tied to the sea give the islands a sense of living culture that feels distinct from more commercialized destinations.
Travelers come here because Dinagat is still unspoiled. It offers the kind of discovery that has become rare in the Philippines: a hidden lagoon reached only by kayak, a freshwater cave pool glowing in the light, a bonsai forest perched on mountain ridges, or a long beach with no footprints but your own. For those who have already seen Palawan or Siargao, Dinagat feels like stepping back in time - raw, authentic, and quietly unforgettable.
How did Dinagat Islands province get its name?
The legend of Dina and Gat is a folklore story about two lovers from rival tribes who fell in love, fled to a secluded island paradise, and lived there until foreign invaders appeared.
Facing the threat, the couple disappeared into the sea, and two islets, Lalaking Bukid and Babaeng Bukid (Male and Female Mountains), emerged where they were last seen, with the island later named Dinagat in their honor.
